Expert masterclasses for Filton Concert Brass and Friends

Filton Concert Brass have organised a series of masterclasses for Filton and friends with expert guest speakers including Martin Britt, Glenn Van Looy, and Michael Fowles. The classes have run in place of the band's rehearsal night on Wednesday evenings.

The first masterclass took place on Wednesday 15th July when Filton band members and friends enjoyed a fantastic masterclass session with Martin Britt, who led them through 'taking the noise out of brass playing', discussing putting the fundamentals of brass playing in place, and offering advice on tackling performance anxiety.

"It was lovely to see everyone and to get some valuable tips from such a fab musician."

- Carolyn Chandler

On the 29th July, the band and friends were delighted to welcome euphonium virtuoso Glenn Van Looy, who delivered an incredibly useful masterclass on getting our playing back into shape after some time off. Glenn was supposed to be conducting the band at the Senior Cup contest this year in Blackpool, which was unfortunately cancelled, so it was great for everyone to catch up!

It was a pleasure to welcome Michael Fowles to the virtual bandroom on 5th August. Mike who delivered a fascinating masterclass on 'Taking the mystery out of adjudication'. Mike revealed in great detail the process of contest adjudicating, providing invaluable advice on how to prepare for a contest!

"It was fascinating and made me want to get rehearsing test pieces! Mike was excellent and it was lovely to have a band evening."

- Joanna Ainsworth

Thomas Dunne, Filton Band Manager, said of the masterclasses, "It has been a great way to maintain the motivation to practice and hone our knowledge of brass playing and performance as individual players and as a band, with experts coming in to talk about how to get back into practice, introducing ideas on the mechanics of playing, and providing insight into the adjudication system and approach. Our thanks go out to Martin Britt, Glenn Van Looy, and Mike Fowles for their time in imparting their wisdom and advice. The Q&A in each session was particularly useful to get some burning questions answered!"
