On the 5th and 6th January 2019, the newly-reformed Gloucestershire Youth Brass Band (GYBB) met for the first time under Ian Porthouse for a weekend course with expert sectional tutors. The band recorded their performance of several pieces for their Music For Youth entry and invited previous members of GYBB back to the stage to play with the band.
On Sunday 6th January 2019, a free Youth Development Day took place, including a conducting masterclass from Ian Porthouse, and a Youth Band Approaches presentation and discussion with Piet Visser (Netherlands), Remi Vilys (Lithuanian Eruopean Brass Band Championships (EBBC) delegate), and Laurynas Vilys (Lithuanian Brass Band Association representative), chaired by Thomas Dunne. The day was well-attended, with plenty to learn from Porthouse's expertise and anecdotes, and the inspiring talks showed that youth music can flourish with enthusiastic volunteers, and communication and collaboration between local, national, and international organisations.
A more detailed report of the day is to follow. GBBA would also like to thank Steve Legge and Gloucestershire Music for organising the GYBB course and helping organise the GBBA Youth Development Day.
If you attended the Youth Development Day and have any feedback on the event, please send GBBA an email: firstname.lastname@example.org. We will be happy to hear from you and any comments or suggestions you have. Together, we can grow the youth brass band movement in Gloucestershire!
