Seeking Marching Band for Carnival

A parade piece is being put together for Gloucester Carnival on behalf of the Carnival Arts Partnership (contracted by Marketing Gloucester). The Carnival Arts Partnership involves many bodies, including Cath Wilkins, Marketing Gloucester, Art Shape, Global Arts, the Hindu Cultural Assoc Gloucester & Team MSB, which are working collaboratively on a parade piece with international carnivalists Shademakers UK & choreographer Manuela Benini. It’s an ACE funded project.

The Carnival is working with an integrated group of disabled & non-disabled community & professional performers, including South Asian dancers. The audience is usually large and diverse, especially if it’s sunny!

The 2018 theme for Gloucester Carnival is ‘World in Motion’ and we are working on a piece inspired by Gloucester’s (and the Hindu Association’s) links with train and railway building. The artistic team are therefore keen to have a brass band join the parade piece. Manuela (the choreographer) will give more detailed instructions regarding the music but, essentially, a group of musicians are needed, who are confident to play in a parade (it will be intermittently, as recorded music will also be used) and, potentially, to play on the bandstand in Gloucester Park after the parade (as a ‘finale’ is planned with dancing and audience interaction).

The dates to commit to would be:

  • Sat 15 July : dress rehearsal at Milestone School Gloucester (it would be good to have some if not all of the musicians there so the performers can get used to the sound / timing of the piece?)

  • Sat 21 July : Carnival day (the parade is from 3.30 – c.5pm but the band would be needed beforehand to prep / warm up of course & after hopefully to play in the park)

Are you able to help? There is a small budget for expenses and/or a reasonable fee. Only a modest group of fairly confident marching musicians are needed! If you're interested, please contact Cath via email: cathwilkins70@gmail.com.
