Lydney Town Band is proud to welcome Thomas Dunne MMus as Musical Director. In light of the successful 40-strong Training Band under the direction of Kevin Ford, the Town Band is looking to develop by bringing together players to compete and perform in concert under new direction from Thomas.
Tom graduated from the RWCMD with a BMus (Hons) on euphonium in 2017 and a fast-track MMus in Musical Performance in 2018, studying under renowned euphonium virtuoso David Childs. Tom currently plays for Filton Concert Brass and has recently developed a passion for conducting, over the last year covering concerts and rehearsals with a number of bands.
The Lydney Band Chairman, Kevin, said of the new MD: “We are extremely pleased that Tom, such a talented musician, will take Lydney Town Band forward in a new direction. Having been the MD for several years, I moved to Solo Horn for the 2020 Area contest but it looks like I’ll be staying now!”
Working hard for the Area
For the WofE Area, Tom did the groundwork on the Second Section test piece Golden Sabre. However, due to his commitments with Filton Concert Brass, Lydney Town Band was conducted by Siôn Rhys Jones, MD for Cross Keys Silver Band and euphonium for Cory Band.
Band Secretary Kerry said, “It is very inspiring having such high calibre musicians guiding us through the music. We are very grateful to Tom and Siôn for their hard work. We look forward to working with Tom and maintaining our association with Siôn over the coming years.”
Speaking of his appointment, Tom said “I was delighted to be asked to prepare Lydney Town for the Area contest. I’ve known this lovely group of players for several years now, and am thrilled to be appointed as their new MD to lead the band forward. My thanks go to all the band, and my good friend Sion Rhys Jones for conducting at the contest. With the already hugely successful Training Band as a foundation stone, this is an organisation brimming with potential. Moving forward, the Town Band will play its most active role since its reformation in 2012, expanding our player base, working on exciting repertoire, and doing more concerts and competitions over the course of the year. Clearly, with the players’ enthusiasm, this will happen! We hope soon to welcome new faces to develop the band into 2021 and beyond. The future looks good!”
